Yesterday I went to the ITNext Summit in Pakhuis de Zwijger in Amsterdam.
It was totally rad!
For me it was a great opportunity to socialize with people in my field of expertise and every other trending topic at the moment.
The main topic were:
- Blockchain
- VR/ AR/ MR/ XR
- Security
- Deep learning

Haha no but really it was an amazing day!
VR/ AR/ MR/ XR
I was looking forward the most to the Hololens talk. For those of you who don’t know -> my background is in game development.
And some of my current projects are based on Augmented Reality so this talk seemed to cover both worlds 😀
The speaker had some awesome demo projects and showed great understanding of the techniques involved but the talk was so basic that I already knew 90 to 95%. 🙁 And I know almost nothing about the Hololens!
My base knowledge was I knew you had to put it on your head. And I saw a demo by Microsoft with some Minecraft integration.
I did learn about the mapping of the environment and that it actually uses occlusion so that is an awesome feature to do some fun stuff with.
Too bad this only works on Microsoft computers which means that I’ll probably never develop for it… Unless it’s for some customer that provides all the stuff 🙂
Blockchain
Two talks were on blockchain. For some reason I can not get interested in blockchain… While everyone is screaming how amazing and world changing it is I’m like:
Deep learning
This is one hell of an awesome topic.
Three talks were dedicated to this! And they were all relevant.
I’m seeing it in a new light now even though I’ve been to a deep learning presentation before!
So many amazing examples. A way to differentiate product pictures. It took them 3 months to learn the system how to see what picture is what product but it saved the company 6 and a half years of manual labor.
The guy from Picnic was there as well and they improved the app with deep learning. They try to predict what you most likely want to order and they offer a bulk option to order them all at once. One click grocery shopping 😀
Security
I will skip the security talks because I just don’t care.
Conclusion
It was an awesome summit day.
Something I haven’t really mentioned is that I met a lot of interesting people and might even have some new business opportunities because of it!
I had one insight because of another great talk.
I’ve been trying to niche down for some time now with Rising Step and I might just go the Augmented Reality/ Mixed Reality route.
Spoke with some guys that were working in this niche and it seems really awesome and combined with iOS only it might be a really strong niche.
Nothing is set in stone yet but I’ll just let this thought linger for a bit and see where it goes.
